In Papar, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry conducted inspections on 7,527 premises as part of Ops Kesan to monitor the impact of the service tax hike from 6% to 8% that came into effect on March 1.

Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali disclosed that 409 notices were issued to traders for further action, with 25 complaints already received. He emphasized the issuance of notices to traders who adjusted their prices post-tax hike, requiring them to justify their actions to prevent unreasonable price increases.

During a walkabout at the Papar weekly market site, the minister mentioned that 6,566 premises were inspected under Ops Pantau, initiated on the first day of Ramadan. Additionally, 226 complaints were lodged, resulting in 26 investigation papers being opened for follow-up actions.

The focus of the operation was to oversee product supply, prices, sales practices, use of scales, counterfeit goods, and halal concerns during the Ramadan and Syawal months. The ministry deployed 2,200 enforcement officers to consumer-heavy locations to ensure a fair and safe business environment.

Armizan reiterated the importance of monitoring traders’ compliance with pricing regulations to safeguard consumers from unjustified price hikes. Enhancing consumer protection and maintaining ethical business standards are key priorities for the ministry.

He encouraged consumers to report any suspicious price adjustments or unethical practices to the ministry for swift action. The government is committed to upholding transparency and fairness in the marketplace to benefit both businesses and consumers.

Armizan thanked the public for their cooperation and support in maintaining a conducive business climate. The ministry will continue its vigilance to ensure that traders abide by regulations and avoid exploiting consumers for profit.
