An “operation” is underway to locate the owners of approximately 150 abandoned units at the First Garden low-cost flats in Ipoh. Jelapang assemblyman Cheah Pou Hian has stated that the purpose of the operation is to find the owners and gather their opinions on what they wish to do with their properties. According to Cheah, some of the abandoned units have been occupied by drug users and other suspicious individuals, prompting safety concerns raised by residents in the surrounding area since 2018.
During a press conference on Wednesday (Sept 13), Cheah mentioned that there are a total of 280 units in the four-block flats. Out of these, approximately 80 units are rented out, 45 unit owners are still residing there, and 17 units are being illegally occupied. Cheah has urged owners who have forsaken their units along with individuals possessing information about those who have left to get in touch with him or come forward to his service centre. He also intends to collaborate with banks and the Local Government Department to identify the owners.
Cheah reminisced about the flats once being a pleasant place to live and expressed his desire to see the area undergo positive changes. He has already organized a massive gotong-royong (community cleanup) to restore the abandoned units.
