    Optimising collaborative efforts to advance psychological knowledge

    University of Reading Malaysia and Labyrinth Psychological Centre have officially established a partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further enhance psychological research and related aspects. The MoU, signed by University of Reading Malaysia provost and CEO Prof Wing Lam and Labyrinth Psychological Centre founder Tan Zong Yan, signifies a joint commitment to advancing academic research, promoting professional development, and improving community wellbeing in Johor, Malaysia.

    The collaboration aims to facilitate involvement in research projects, combining their expertise in psychology to address current mental health challenges. Both institutions will have opportunities for joint workshops and training sessions to support the ongoing professional development of academics and psychologists in their respective organizations.

    University of Reading Malaysia and Labyrinth Psychological Centre have also pledged to conduct community outreach programs to raise awareness about psychology, reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues, and ensure that psychological services are more accessible to underserved populations.

    Associate Prof Dr Chung Kai Li, head of psychology at University of Reading Malaysia, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the benefits for students who are eager to gain experience in clinical settings. Through this collaboration, they aim to engage in research, teaching, and placement opportunities.

    Both institutions are optimistic about the success of their partnership, which is expected to lead to advancements in psychological research and the provision of high-quality, evidence-based psychological services. University of Reading Malaysia is an international branch campus of the University of Reading in the UK, known for its strong reputation in teaching and research. The School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, which recently celebrated its centenary, is one of the oldest psychology departments in the UK.

    In the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject, the psychology program at University of Reading Malaysia was placed in the top 200 globally. On the other hand, Labyrinth Psychological Centre, established in 2020, is among the few centers in Johor Bahru with clinical psychologists registered under the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council.

    The centre offers a wide range of psychological services, including assessments and therapy for both children and adults. They also provide services in other areas of Johor, such as Batu Pahat and Kulai, on a locum basis.
