According to Tan Sri Azam Baki, graft investigators are not discounting the possibility that other senior police officers may be involved in the case of a police officer who was arrested for allegedly accepting bribes in exchange for turning a blind eye to certain illegal activities. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner mentioned that this aspect is currently under investigation as authorities delve deeper into the matter.
Azam emphasized, “I believe that he was not acting alone. There could be (other senior officers) involved. We are looking into that now,” during a press conference held in Putrajaya on Friday (March 29). The investigators are also working on determining the total amount of bribes the officer is suspected of having accepted and tracking how the money was spent.
It was stated that although RM1.2 million has been seized, the actual figure of the bribes received is still being ascertained. Azam further mentioned, “We are also tracing those who are said to have paid him as well as others who received the money.” The arrest of the senior police officer from the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters occurred on Sunday (March 24).
The said officer, in his 40s, is alleged to have taken bribes to offer protection to illegal activities such as gambling, prostitution, and gangsterism within the city. In connection to the case, MACC has confiscated RM1.2 million in cash from several properties believed to be linked to the police officer.
