IPOH: Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri has revealed that over 180 students in Perak have been arrested for various offenses this year. These cases, which occurred between January and October, include eight students who were arrested for drug-related offenses, along with 71 cases of violence, 50 related to property crime, and 62 involving various other crimes. This is in comparison to the same period last year when 65 students were arrested, 44 of whom were involved in violence, seven in property crime, and four in non-index crime.
The violence cases encompass crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery, and causing harm to others, while property crime cases involve stealing different types of vehicles and theft. Non-index cases include minor offenses like fighting, defamation, riots, possessing dangerous weapons, and making threats. Comm Mohd Yusri noted that in 2022, 11 students were arrested for drug offenses. Out of a total of 19 drug cases recorded in 2022 and 2023, nine students were arrested for drug possession, while the remaining 10 tested positive for drugs. However, the Perak police chief assured the public that the crimes involving school students in Perak are still under control, stating, “So far we have yet to have any cases where students were recruited to join gangs in Perak. We will issue a complete statistical report by the end of the year, but for now, everything is still under control.”
