The police in Johor Baru are joining forces with the Education Department and Bank Negara to tackle the issue of scam cases, which have reached over 3,000 recorded cases in the state this year. State police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat stated that the Commercial Crime Department of the police force is working closely with other government agencies and private entities to address the problem. The Johor Commercial Crime Department has reported 3,185 cases from January to September of this year, marking an increase compared to the same period in 2022 when 2,403 cases were recorded. This represents a rise of 782 cases or 32.5%. Out of the 3,185 cases reported this year, online scams account for the majority, specifically 2,614 cases or 82.1% of the total. Some examples of the online scams reported include online purchases, phone scams, non-existing investments, and employment offers. Comm Kamarul Zaman made these remarks during a speech at the Johor police’s monthly assembly held at the state police headquarters.
Comm Kamarul Zaman pledged that the police force will continue to conduct both face-to-face and online awareness campaigns to educate the public about this issue. He emphasized that collaboration with other government agencies and private entities such as the Johor Education Department and Bank Negara is vital to raise awareness among the public regarding scam-related crimes.
