According to Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim, there have been a total of 383 cases of online fraud, especially phone scams, in Perlis from January to November this year. These cases have resulted in losses amounting to RM5.1 million.
Out of the total cases, the highest number of cases involved telecommunication fraud or phone scam, with 127 cases, incurring losses amounting to RM1,663,807.58 million. This was followed by ecommerce scams, which had 110 cases with RM831,690.80 in losses.
Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim stated that various awareness programmes on commercial crimes have been implemented to curb such crimes. In 2023, a total of 109 such activities were carried out, including 52 talks and 36 exhibitions related to crime prevention initiatives.
During the opening of a Town Hall event titled ‘Jenayah Penipuan Di Era Digital’ at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap), he mentioned that the Perlis police are proactive in carrying out programmes to create awareness on commercial crimes and these programmes can have a positive impact on a large scale.
Additionally, Muhammad added that there were 171 ‘mule account’ cases recorded from January to November this year, and legal action has been taken in all these cases. – Bernama
