The Kelantan Health Department has identified more than 40 state health facilities that are at risk of being affected by flooding during the monsoon season, according to its director, Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin (pic). The number is based on previous floods in the state. Dr Zaini emphasized the need for ongoing preparedness and adherence to established guidelines, as flood incidents can be caused by various factors such as drainage and development. He shared that past experiences with floods have provided valuable lessons, emphasizing the importance of readiness.

Dr Zaini also mentioned that the department has identified suitable health facilities to accommodate patients requiring urgent and follow-up treatment, including kidney patients and expectant mothers about to give birth. This proactive measure aims to ensure the continuity of healthcare services during flood situations.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that RM300 million has been allocated to the National Disaster Management Agency for flood preparations this year. Additionally, the government has agreed to increase the allocation for the National Disaster Relief Fund to RM200 million. These financial resources aim to support and enhance the country’s flood preparedness and response efforts.

Dr Zaini’s statements came during the opening of the 14th Asia Pacific Cardiology Update 2023 (APCU) on Saturday (21 Oct). He stressed the importance of being well-prepared for potential flooding incidents and highlighted the necessity of following established guidelines. By taking these actions, the Kelantan Health Department aims to protect its health facilities and ensure the continued provision of essential healthcare services to the affected population.

Flooding during the monsoon season is a recurring challenge in Kelantan and other parts of Malaysia. The identification of at-risk health facilities and the establishment of alternative healthcare centers demonstrate the state’s commitment to safeguarding public health and minimizing disruptions to medical services. The government’s financial allocation towards flood preparations and relief efforts further illustrates its commitment to protecting citizens and providing necessary support during flood incidents.

As unpredictable as floods can be, the lessons learned from previous experiences serve as valuable insight for proactive measures and mitigating future risks. By prioritizing preparedness and taking preemptive actions, Kelantan’s health facilities are better equipped to manage and overcome potential challenges posed by flooding.

The identification and readiness of suitable health facilities underline the importance of prioritizing the healthcare needs of vulnerable groups, such as expectant mothers and patients requiring critical treatments like kidney patients. These measures aim to ensure the smooth continuation of healthcare services, even in adverse situations like floods.

In conclusion, the Kelantan Health Department’s identification of over 40 at-risk health facilities, along with its proactive measures to establish alternative healthcare centers, reflects a preparedness mindset towards mitigating potential disruptions caused by floods. The government’s allocation of substantial funds towards flood preparations and relief efforts further strengthens Malaysia’s ability to respond effectively to flood incidents and safeguard the well-being of its citizens.
