KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 47,728 police personnel and officers, along with their spouses, are scheduled to cast their votes at 260 voting centers consisting of 377 voting streams during early voting today.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain emphasized that there is no excuse for any member of the police force to neglect their civic duty.
“Voting is a right bestowed upon all of us. It demonstrates to the public that the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) embraces the democratic process of voting,” he said in a video message yesterday.
“I also take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to all police personnel and officers who have served and will continue to serve during the state elections.
“To the police personnel and officers assigned to the elections, execute your duties with utmost dedication and maintain a high level of professionalism. Stay calm and composed in the face of any provocation,” he added.
According to the Election Commission (EC) website, early voting in the six state elections will also involve 49,660 Malaysian Armed Forces personnel and their spouses, as reported by Bernama.
The early voting process will also include the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election. This decision was made following the ruling of the Terengganu Election Court on June 27, which invalidated the victory of PAS candidate Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim in the 15th General Election due to corruption.
The EC stated that the most recent electoral roll, updated up to June 21, will be used for the Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan state elections, as well as the Kuala Terengganu by-election.
Meanwhile, the early voters in the Kuala Terengganu by-election will include 1,362 policemen, 35 military personnel, and their spouses. Four early polling centers will be opened at the Kuala Terengganu police contingent headquarters.
All the early polling centers for the six state elections and the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election will open simultaneously at 8am and close at staggered times based on their respective locations.
In Kuala Terengganu, the polling centers for the Batu Buruk state constituency will be the first to close at noon, followed by the Bandar state constituency at 2pm, and finally, the Ladang state constituency at 5pm. There will be no early polling centers for the Waqaf Mempelam state constituency.
The EC has set August 12 as the polling date for the state elections and the Kuala Terengganu by-election, with early voting taking place on August 8.
The elections in the six states involve 36 state constituencies in Kedah, 45 in Kelantan, 32 in Terengganu, 40 in Penang, 56 in Selangor, and 36 in Negri Sembilan.
The campaign period is set for 14 days, starting from nomination day on July 29 and ending at 11.59pm on Friday.
