59 undocumented foreigners were detained by the Immigration department in a three-hour operation in the city of Seremban. State Immigration director Kennith Tan Ai Kiang, in a joint operation with police and Seremban City Council officials, said that 961 foreigners were screened on Sunday evening.
“The raids were carried out in areas identified as hotspots in the city,” he said in a statement. The offences were related to not having proper personal identification documents, abusing pass conditions and overstaying.
The majority of those detained were Myanmar nationals (21), followed by Bangladeshis (20), Nepalis (nine), Pakistanis (four), Indians (two) and one each from Indonesia, China and Uganda. The individuals detained were between the ages of 16 and 48.
According to Tan, some of the undocumented foreigners attempted to flee but were apprehended. “Some also pleaded with the officers to be let go,” he said. The detainees will be sent to the Immigration depot in Lenggeng for further action.
The department plans to continue daily operations to ensure that all foreigners working in the city have valid documents. Tan also reminded employers and the public not to hire or harbor any undocumented foreigner as they can face legal action. He emphasized the importance of conforming to the local immigration laws.
