In the MySaveFood@Ramadan 2024 programme, a total of 60.65 tonnes of food and drinks were saved from 139 Ramadan bazaars across the nation, amounting to RM724,770. Deputy Minister Senator Fuziah Salleh highlighted that this resulted in preventing 113,763kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
The collaboration between the ministry and Pertubuhan Gema Malaysia (Pemuda Gema) involved around 2,112 volunteers, with Gerakan Pengguna Siswa (GPS) also participating this year with 323 volunteers. This collective effort led to saving 14.52 tonnes of food and drinks in 27 Ramadan bazaars.
Speaking about the programme’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to reduce global food waste and limit greenhouse gas emissions, Fuziah expressed satisfaction with the positive development shown by the increased involvement of volunteers and GPS from universities.
All the collected food and drinks will be distributed to students, welfare homes, the homeless, and those in need, ensuring that the resources are put to good use. This year’s success is illustrated by the significant increase from last year, where only 25 tonnes of food and drinks were collected from 55 bazaars.
Fuziah extended gratitude to all volunteers and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to continuing and expanding this effort, hoping that it will become a widespread cultural practice in the future.
