Kuching: The Borneo Cultures Museum in Sarawak has become a popular attraction, with over 700,000 visitors since its opening in March last year, according to Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister. Notable visitors have included the Raja Permaisuri Agong and foreign ambassadors, along with locals and tourists. This surge in interest is boosting Sarawak’s tourism industry, said Abdul Karim at the pre-launch ceremony of the International Museum Day celebration.

Abdul Karim added that the Borneo Cultures Museum serves as a unifying force, showcasing the history and culture of Sarawak’s diverse ethnic communities. By featuring exhibits from various ethnic groups, the museum promotes unity in diversity. This distinctive aspect of the museum is something the people of Sarawak take great pride in.

From July 31 to August 5, the Borneo Cultures Museum will serve as the venue for the national-level International Museum Day celebration. This will mark the third time Sarawak has hosted the event, after previous occasions in 2003 and 2013. Throughout the celebration, museums from all over Malaysia will participate in an exhibition at the Borneo Cultures Museum. In addition, a temporary exhibition will be held, focusing on the theme of Museums, Sustainability, and Wellbeing.

Visitors can also look forward to various activities, such as a sape workshop, curator crash course, Sarawak heritage kitchen, and performances by renowned artists including Amy Search, Jaclyn Victor, Bob Yusuf, and Ricky Anderson. Abdul Karim encourages everyone to seize this opportunity to learn about the role of museums in society, and he believes the International Museum Day celebration will be a valuable addition to Sarawak’s tourism calendar this year.
