PUTRAJAYA: Approximately RM10.49bil has been invested in developing rural infrastructure between 2020 and June 2024, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Rural and Regional Development Minister said that this includes the building of roads as well as supplying electricity, water and social amenities to Orang Asli villages and remote areas.
He added that the substantial investment underscores the government’s commitment to prioritise the well-being of rural communities and uplift them.
“Robust infrastructure attracts investment, generates employment opportunities, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices,” said Ahmad Zahid.
“By prioritising rural infrastructure development, we lay the foundation for inclusive growth and poverty reduction,” he added in his opening speech at the National Symposium on Rural Planning and Development 2024 at the Damar Sari Hall here today (Aug 8).
Also present was Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
Ahmad Zahid also said that it is important to embrace digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as both can revolutionise rural economies.
“Digitisation can enhance agricultural productivity, improve healthcare delivery and create new economic opportunities. AI on the other hand, can be leveraged to provide smart solutions in farming, resource management, and disaster response,” he added.
He said that rural entrepreneurship stands to gain significantly from digital technology, which enables businesses to expand their markets beyond local boundaries.
“By utilising e-commerce platforms and digital marketing tools, rural entrepreneurs can access national and international markets.
“Imagine a beautiful piece of batik in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu being sold online to customers around the world, transforming a rural product into a global commodity in an instant,” said Ahmad Zahid.
He said that the Rural and Regional Development Ministry has paved the way for entrepreneurs to benefit from digital technology, including through the Rural Entrepreneurs Digitalisation Programme.
“Since 2022, a total of 3,078 rural entrepreneurs have benefitted from the programme. Empowering women and youth is crucial for sustainable development and inclusive approach to rural development,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid added that in his capacity as the chairman of the Malaysia Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council chairman, he aspires for this to be a transformative force in the country’s educational system.
“There are a total of 1,345 TVET institutions, with my ministry overseeing the largest number at 280 institutions.
“I envision it as a preferred pathway for advancing education to higher levels and offering extensive career opportunities for the youth,” he said.
