According to Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, over 5 tonnes of drugs worth RM35.83mil were seized in 2023. The Johor Narcotic Investigation Department arrested 16,598 people for various drug offences during the same period.
Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat stated that the department’s performance in terms of the number of arrests was the third best in the country. The department also arrested 615 drug addicts under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for repeated offences, also ranking third in the country for this performance.
He also revealed that 127 people were arrested under the Special Prevention Measures (LLPK) with 124 of them being given detention or restriction orders. This performance ranks as the best among all contingents nationwide.
The department also managed to cripple 16 drug syndicates, leading to 98 arrests and the seizure of RM25.07mil worth of drugs and RM7.08mil worth of assets.
Comm Kamarul also mentioned that an operation called Ops Tapis Khas was conducted statewide, leading to the arrest of 1,478 people, including 175 suspects on the wanted list in drug hot spots such as fishermen’s jetties, people’s housing programme (PPR) flats and Felda areas.
He highlighted that the department charged 5,728 cases in court and solved 12,947 cases in the last year. He urged the public to continue providing information on any drug-related activities and provided a hotline number for the public to use. Additionally, the department disposed of 322.13kg and 1,562.60 litres of drugs worth RM5.43mil last year.
