In Malaysia, there are currently about 75,000 inmates in sixty prisons across the country, which exceeds the maximum capacity of 71,000 prisoners. This overcrowding in prisons has resulted in the number of inmates surpassing the designated capacity by 5.6%, according to Prisons Department director-general Datuk Nordin Muhamad.
It has been reported that around 4,000 prisoners are undergoing rehabilitation in the community through various programmes including the Compulsory Attendance Order, Parole, and Licensed Release of Prisoners (PBSL).
Datuk Nordin Muhamad stated that the rehabilitation success rate of the Malaysian Prisons Department is at 82.4%, which means that the rehabilitated offenders do not relapse into criminal activities within a three-year period after their release.
These remarks were made during a briefing to the Crown Prince of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah during his visit to the Puncak Alam Correctional Centre on Tuesday (Jan 16). Tengku Amir Shah also visited the Integrity School at the centre and watched a musical theatre performance titled Bila Anak Laut Berdoa by the inmates. – Bernama
