KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian P-Hailing Riders Association (Penghantar) is urging the government to allocate the RM42 million for a career development programme to entrepreneurship skills training instead. According to Penghantar president Zulhelmi Mansor, this initiative is vital as the majority of p-hailing service providers are B40 youths who need to enhance their knowledge and skills to improve their future prospects. Mansor also stresses the importance of expanding the riders’ knowledge and experience through proper programmes in order to ensure their success in the gig economy and p-hailing industry.
“For example, many SPM holders are now more attracted to become gig economy workers instead of continuing their studies. They have chosen this path due to the unstable economic situation in the world and Malaysia, among other factors. Therefore, we hope that the government’s aid can be utilized for other skills programmes that will help us produce entrepreneurs among p-hailing workers,” Mansor mentioned in a recent interview.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the launch of the Madani Economy: Empowering the Rakyat framework, announced the allocation of RM42 million for a career development programme for individuals in the informal sector. This initiative, to be conducted through Socso, aims to provide upskilling programmes for those with SPM qualifications and below.
Zulhelmi also suggested that p-hailing service companies ensure every rider is registered and actively contributing to the Social Protection Scheme for Self-Employed. This will ensure that they are covered in the event of any untoward incidents. He further emphasized that if riders do not have active contributions or are not registered, p-hailing operators should temporarily suspend their IDs and make sure they have Work Disaster Social Protection for their own welfare and that of their dependents. Failure to comply with these guidelines should result in actions against the operator,” he added.
