The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) expressed satisfaction with the Health Ministry’s success in securing a refund of RM16,785,910 for 104 non-functional ventilator units. PAC chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin stated that this action was in line with PAC’s recommendations related to the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly addressing expired vaccines, non-functional ventilators, and excess personal protective equipment.
The recommendations were presented to Parliament on Oct 30, 2023. Mas Ermieyati highlighted that the ministry’s actions align with the third recommendation, which emphasized the review of warranty status for all 136 ventilator units and taking necessary actions against those responsible. The ministry is proposing that the refunded funds be utilized and supplemented by the Finance Ministry to ensure adequate availability of ventilator equipment in all government hospitals.
In addition, measures have been taken by the ministry to ensure optimal utilization of excess stock of boot covers and protective jumpsuits or coveralls. PAC also emphasized the importance of maintaining optimal stock levels of these items to prepare for any future outbreaks or pandemics.
Prior to this, PAC conducted follow-up proceedings on the report on March 7, which involved summoning witnesses such as Treasury deputy secretary-general (management) Ramzi Mansor, Health Ministry treasury deputy secretary-general (finance) Datuk Seri Norazman Ayob, and deputy health director-general (public health) Datuk Dr Norhayati Rusli. – Bernama
