BUTTERWORTH: Pakatan Harapan’s Sungai Puyu candidate Phee Syn Tze has clarified that she holds permanent residency (PR) status in New Zealand, allowing her to study and work in the country, but she is not a citizen.

Responding to queries on social media regarding her citizenship, Syn Tze explained that she went to New Zealand in 1997 to pursue her studies and subsequently found employment there, making it more convenient for her to apply for PR.

However, in 2008, she made the decision to return to her home country, Malaysia. She emphasized that her family is settled in Malaysia, with her husband running a business. Syn Tze wishes for her children to grow up in Malaysia to be exposed to multiple languages and cultures, as she believes it will benefit their upbringing.

In response to comments on social media questioning her citizenship, Syn Tze stated, “My family is settled in Malaysia. My husband runs a business here. I want my children to grow up here so that they will learn many languages and cultures.”

At 38 years old, Syn Tze is the daughter of Phee Boon Poh, who has served as an assemblyman in Penang for five terms after contesting state seats seven times since 1990.
