KUALA PILAH: Noorzunita Begum Mohd Ibrahim, a 43-year-old businesswoman who has been running a tent rental business for the past 20 years, has witnessed the struggles of the underprivileged and needy throughout her work. Having organized events in both urban areas and rural villages, she has always been deeply touched by the challenges faced by those less fortunate.
Noorzunita Begum, who is currently representing Pakatan Harapan as their candidate for the Pilah seat in Negri Sembilan, recalled the moments when underprivileged neighbors of her customers would come to watch the tent setups. Witnessing their hardships inspired her to join politics and work towards making a difference for those in need.
Encouraged by her husband, a member of the Kuala Pilah PKR Youth wing, Noorzunita Begum gradually climbed the political ladder and eventually became the chief of the state PKR Women’s wing. Through home visits to single mothers and underprivileged communities, she felt compelled to pursue politics to have a greater impact.
“Politics isn’t just about providing direct assistance; it’s also about creating policies to comprehensively support the community and guide them towards a better future,” she expressed during a recent interview. “Serving the people requires pouring your heart and soul into it.”
As the campaign period approaches its halfway mark, Noorzunita Begum emphasized that most voters in the Pilah constituency still prefer meeting their candidates face-to-face rather than in virtual settings. Taking community leaders’ feedback into account, she has planned her campaign schedule accordingly to ensure personal interactions with constituents, particularly because a significant portion of the voters in the area are over 40 years old.
If elected, Noorzunita Begum stated that her main focus will be on development, with particular attention given to rural areas. She highlighted the expressed interest of village communities in the agriculture sector and their desire for support from their assemblyman. She believes that holistic development of the constituency can contribute to reducing the number of hardcore poor.
Noorzunita Begum is engaged in a straight fight with state PAS commissioner Rafiei Mustapha for the Pilah seat. Polling in Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu is set to take place on August 12, with early voting commencing on August 8.
