KUALA LUMPUR: According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Chan Foong Hin, panic buying of white rice has significantly decreased and the local supply of rice has stabilized this week. This is due to the lack of panic buying by consumers and traders, compared to the previous week.

Chan mentioned that the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) operations center has distributed 400 metric tonnes (MT) of local white rice per month, in addition to an extra 1,100 MT for distribution through all Fama networks to meet the public’s demand.

Chan made these remarks while officiating the 2023 World Rabies Day celebration in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (Oct 1).

When asked about the possibility of profiteering from the local white rice shortage, Chan emphasized that the issue should not be politicized. He stated that numerous operations conducted by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry have revealed no wrongdoing or irregularities of such nature.

He suggested that efforts should be focused on issues related to logistics, distribution, and ensuring efficient and effective local rice stocks instead. The report was sourced from Bernama.
