Former Umno Youth executive council member Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, has been convicted for causing injury to Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and for hurling disrespectful and insulting words at him. The Magistrate’s Court in Kajang, Malaysia, fined him RM2,100 for these offenses on September 12.

Judge Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli delivered the decision, stating that the defense failed to establish reasonable doubt against Wan Muhammad Azri, who is 40 years old. “Therefore, the accused is found guilty of two charges. For the amended charge of uttering disrespectful and insulting words, he is fined RM100, in default of one day jail, while for the charge of causing injury, he is fined RM2,000, in default of three months’ jail,” the judge declared.

Following the sentencing, Muhammad Noor Firdaus referred to a hadith that translates to: “A (perfect) Muslim is one who is safe from the tongue and hands,” serving as a reminder to Wan Muhammad Azri, who once studied in a “pondok” school.

In his mitigation plea, Wan Muhammad Azri’s lawyer, Nik Saiful Adli Burhan, requested a minimal fine as his client is only a trader with no fixed income. Deputy Public Prosecutor Norfarhanim Abdul Halim, on the other hand, urged for a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused and others.

On February 21 of this year, the Magistrate instructed Wan Muhammad Azri to present his defense after determining that the prosecution had successfully established a prima facie case against him. He was also told to defend himself against an amended charge of uttering disrespectful words and insulting Syed Saddiq under Section 14 of the Minor Offenses Act 1955, which carries a maximum fine of RM100.

The incident occurred at 11:05 am on February 16, 2019, along Persiaran Impian Perdana, Saujana Impian. Previously, Wan Muhammad Azri was charged with insulting the modesty of Syed Saddiq under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which holds a maximum prison sentence of five years, a fine, or both. He also faced charges of voluntarily causing hurt to Syed Saddiq in accordance with Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
