The Malaysian Para Swimming Association (Prepma) plans to hold six swimming circuits next year in a bid to identify and develop new talent. The move is part of efforts initiated this year to better organise each state’s para swimming associations, said Paralympic Council Malaysia (PCM) president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin.

According to Megat, the purpose of the programme is to enable each state association to independently organise and secure funding for their own programmes, rather than having to rely on the national circuit. This initiative is in line with the Sports Development Cabinet Committee, led by Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who wants to see more grassroots development, especially in swimming and athletics.

Megat made these remarks after officiating the second circuit of the 2023 National Para Swimming Championship at the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Aquatic Centre Arena Larkin.

He stressed the importance of the programme, stating that it could potentially unearth a new generation of talent to take the place of retiring elite athletes.
