SHAH ALAM: Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s sedition case has been postponed again to Oct 25.
According to Astro Awani, High Court Judge Aslam Zainuddin made the decision after a request from Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Masri Mohd Daud that a “representation is still under consideration by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).”
The defence also asked for a one-month postponement for both charges faced by the Kedah Mentri Besar, who is also the Jeneri assemblyman.
The court then set October 25 for the next mention of the case, and for Sanusi to be required to attend the proceedings on that day.
Sanusi’s counsel Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud also told the court that his client had already written a letter seeking forgiveness from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
“I have received instructions to request that the charges be withdrawn, and our side (the defence) does not object to the one-month postponement of this case.
“It is already public knowledge that His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Selangor, has granted forgiveness or pardon to our client,” he said during the proceedings.
Datuk Salehuddin Saidin, who is holding a watching brief for the Selangor Palace, confirmed that the palace had issued a written response accepting the apology in this case, specifically from (Muhammad) Sanusi.”
On July 18, 2023, Sanusi had pleaded not guilty in the Selayang Sessions Court to the two charges, and the case was transferred to the Shah Alam High Court on February 1 for trial.
Sanusi was charged with two counts of uttering seditious remarks on the appointment of the Selangor Mentri Besar and the establishment of the unity government at Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara-Kampung Bendahara, Gombak, at 11pm on July 11 last year.
Both offences fall under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 and are punishable under Section 4(1) of the same act with a fine of up to RM5,000 or a maximum imprisonment of three years, or both, upon conviction.
The case, which was initially set to go on trial in July and August this year had been postponed to Sept 27 for the case management prior to the latest deferral.
On Wednesday (Sept 25), Sanusi issued a public apology for his remarks to the Sultan, who a day later accepted the apology but reminded Sanusi to be mindful of the consequences of his remarks in the future.
