Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the decision made by the Pardons Board to reduce Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s sentence by half was just. This statement was made during an interview with Al Jazeera, where Anwar highlighted that Najib had gone through the legal process and was currently serving a prison sentence after being convicted. Despite this, Anwar emphasized that every citizen has the right to appeal to the King for pardons against their conviction. As a constitutional monarch, Anwar also stressed the role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in upholding the constitution and the rule of law.

Additionally, Anwar pointed out that the King would consult with the Attorney-General and the Prime Minister, among others, before making a decision on granting a pardon. Anwar also shared his past experience of sitting on the Pardons Board during his time in charge of the Federal Territories. During the interview with Al Jazeera, Anwar mentioned that the board decided to reduce the sentence by 50%, requiring a RM50 million fine to be paid in order for Najib to be released in Aug 2028, otherwise, the sentence would be extended to 2029. It was emphasized that the ongoing 1MDB trial should continue independently through the judicial process.

Anwar also highlighted that Najib has the right to appeal to the new King and that the process should be respected. Anwar emphasized that the decision made was beyond the Prime Minister or the government, signifying his respect for the previous King’s decision. Anwar also stated that Najib still has avenues to appeal the decision at a later stage.

It was announced by the Pardons Board earlier on Feb 2 that Najib’s 12-year jail term has been reduced to six years. According to a statement by the board, Najib will be released on Aug 23, 2028 and the fine has been reduced to RM50 million from RM210 million. Najib had been convicted of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering in relation to RM42 million from SRC International. He was also fined RM210 million. Furthermore, Najib is currently on trial facing charges of abuse of power involving RM2.28 billion, believed to have been 1MDB funds.
