Beginning in March, students will no longer be required to wear school uniforms throughout the week when the 2024/2025 academic year kicks off. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the new dress code, which will consist of two days of school uniform, two days of sportswear, and one day of co-curriculum attire.

More details regarding the new dress code will be provided in a circular that will be distributed to schools.

According to Sidek, the decision to change the dress code was made after consulting with various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and the community. Their input played a significant role in the final decision.

Sidek also shared that the move came after the ministry’s previous announcement allowing students and teachers to wear sports attire due to the hot weather. Exemptions have also been granted to students whose uniforms were destroyed during natural disasters, such as floods.

Overall, parents have expressed support for the new directive, citing it as more comfortable for their children and a financial relief. For example, real estate agent Sammy Chong, 33, stated that the new ruling would reduce the number of uniforms that parents need to purchase each year, while also requiring less preparation.

Corporate communications executive Yee, 36, expressed flexibility about the school uniform arrangement. Meanwhile, mother Norliana Ahmad, 42, shared that the new dress code would mean less laundry and preparation for the next school day.

Johor Baru advertising executive Tan Huey Qi, 34, reported that her daughter prefers wearing sports attire over her school uniform, citing comfort and safety reasons. Other parents, such as Masturah Suradi and Ahmad Fahmy Fahd Abdullah, also expressed support for the ministry’s decision.
