KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has been informed of the unexpected vacancy of the Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary seat, effective from yesterday, according to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. The notification was received in the form of a letter from Election Commission (SPR) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, dated July 13. This development aligns with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, following the court’s decision to nullify the results of the Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary seat contest during the 15th General Election.
Johari explains that this situation arose because the incumbent, Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed@Hashim, failed to submit an appeal to the Federal Court by July 11, as stipulated in Section 36A of the Election Offences Act 1954, following the decision of the Election Judge on June 27. Furthermore, the High Court declared on July 11 that the general election result for the Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary constituency held on November 19, 2022, was void. Johari issued this statement on Friday, July 14.
In response to the vacancy, Johari has stated that the EC will conduct an election to fill the vacant seat within 60 days. – Bernama
