BUTTERWORTH: A local woman raised concerns about clothing restrictions with Perikatan Nasional’s Sungai Puyu candidate Andrew Teow Chin Siang during a walkabout in Raja Uda, Penang. Specifically, she asked if voting for him meant she would not be able to wear shorts anymore, drawing a parallel to the incident in Kota Baru, Kelantan where a woman was fined for wearing shorts in her workplace. In response, Teow assured her that there was nothing to worry about and emphasized his Chinese identity despite being associated with PAS.
Teow dismissed concerns about clothing and other cultural issues as tactics used by his opponents to create misconceptions. However, he acknowledged the underlying worries that prompted the woman’s question. He emphasized PAS’ inclusive stance, welcoming individuals of all faiths into the party, including non-Muslims. Teow expressed confidence that he would gain the support of Chinese voters who recognized PAS as a multi-ethnic political party.
Teow, a former Gerakan Youth leader, has transitioned through several political affiliations before aligning himself with PAS. He is one of three Chinese contenders selected by PAS for the Penang state election on August 12. His opponent is DAP’s Phee Syn Tze, the daughter of Sungai Puyu incumbent Phee Boon Poh, who is not contesting.
