PAS has sent their well-wishes to Hindu individuals who observe Thaipusam, urging a smooth and secure celebration for everyone involved. The party’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan stated on Wednesday (Jan 24) that the Thaipusam celebration, titled the ‘Unity Thaipusam’, is anticipated to draw a million attendees to Penang, including tourists, as per the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB).
He further added that such events, including Thaipusam, showcase the variety that enriches the social fabric of the nation. This helps inculcate understanding and appreciation of different cultures, beliefs, and promotes values of openness, moderation, and tolerance among the public.
However, Takiyuddin acknowledged that there might be instances where individuals or groups hold narrow and negative perspectives towards others based on their beliefs, culture, political leanings, or citizenship issues such as loyalty. He emphasized that such views would likely remain on the outskirts if all parties continue to exercise moderation rather than being drawn into meaningless polemics.
He further stressed that while diversity, moderation, and tolerance should be encouraged, they should not be used as a justification to disregard, underestimate or challenge the foundations of the nation. Instead, he urged for flaws such as parochialism, extremism, and excessive approaches to be balanced with moderation, common sense, and courtesy.
Takiyuddin’s statement highlighted the importance of avoiding confrontational approaches and louder voices in dealing with differences, urging for the necessity of respect and acceptance among all parties. He emphasized that these values should be embraced in promoting successful and harmonious celebrations such as Thaipusam.
