According to party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, the recent election results have shown that the people have confidence in PAS’s ability to be in the Federal Government. In his welcoming speech at PAS’ 69th muktamar (general assembly) in Shah Alam, Takiyuddin also expressed that it is not unlikely for PAS to take over Putrajaya, the federal administrative centre of Malaysia. He added that the current administration has not effectively addressed the people’s issues, leading to this possibility.

Takiyuddin highlighted PAS’ victories in Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, and Terengganu in the state elections held on August 12. He stated that this muktamar provides a suitable platform for delegates to engage in quality debates, provide criticism, and conduct a post-mortem of the party’s performance to ensure that they become an effective opposition and state government. Despite being in the opposition, PAS still holds a responsibility to the people due to the significant mandate it received.

PAS currently holds the highest number of seats in the Dewan Rakyat (the lower house of the Parliament of Malaysia) with 42 seats. Along with its partner party, Bersatu, the Perikatan Nasional coalition has a total of 72 seats. Takiyuddin mentioned that at the state level, PAS now holds 46.8% of all state seats in the country. He attributed the party and coalition’s success to the leadership of Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Takiyuddin also expressed that the muktamar is being held in solidarity with the Palestinians, who are currently facing what he described as the “worst conflict in this century against the Zionist regime of Israel.” The three-day assembly is expected to be attended by approximately 5,000 delegates and observers.
