Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said that PAS supports the initiatives of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) chaired by Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

He mentioned that this includes the efforts of the Special Committee set up to study the competencies of state legislative assemblies in enacting Islamic laws and proposing amendments to the Federal Constitution and federal laws, if necessary.

“Part of this effort is to ensure the power of the state legislative body in drafting syariah laws that are clearly stipulated without ambiguity,” Takiyuddin added.

He expressed PAS’s belief that all steps towards upholding syariah law must be taken and given full support, regardless of party or group.

Takiyuddin also expressed confidence in the Malay Rulers as heads of state bearing the historical role as the torch and umbrella of religion, culture and upholding the values, morals, unity, and harmony of the people.

On Feb 15, Sultan Sharaffudin urged all parties to stay calm and refrain from causing disturbances while waiting for the outcome of the special committee studying the competencies of the state legislative assemblies in enacting Islamic laws.

The Sultan, who is also MKI chairman, called on all parties to respect the verdict of the Federal Court and the position of the Federal Constitution as the supreme law of the country which must be supported by all Malaysians.

The Sultan’s comments followed a Federal Court 8-1 majority decision on Feb 9, ruling that 16 provisions for offences under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019 were null and void because the state legislature did not have the power to enact laws on said offences as there were federal laws covering the same offences.
