SIBU: The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) has caused a stir within the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition by holding a function in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (July 13), according to Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian. In an interview on Friday night (July 14), SUPP president Dr Sim questioned the decision to hold the event in Kuala Lumpur, stating, “We are Sarawak-based parties. Do you want to become a chaotic West Malaysian party living in Sarawak? I don’t know.” Dr Sim emphasized the importance of unity among the four component parties in GPS, which allowed them to secure a majority in the 2021 state election, winning 76 out of the 82 seats available. The four component parties are Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
Dr Sim, who is also the Deputy Premier, stated that GPS would address the issue during a meeting on Saturday (July 15) night, discussing why both PDP and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) held an MOU signing event outside of the state. He emphasized that the spirit of GPS is one of discussing matters together, as unity has been the key to their success. Dr Sim also mentioned that he was not surprised by PSB’s actions, as the party has been sending signals to PRS, PDP, and even SUPP about their desire to join the government.
PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and PSB president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (July 13), solidifying their parties’ collaboration. Tiong expressed that the agreement is an important step towards achieving political stability in both the state and country.
