The Election Commission (EC) has revealed that the voter turnout for the Pelangai state by-election on Saturday (Oct 7) is currently at 10% as of 9am.

According to Bernama, a total of nine polling centres with 30 channels opened at 8am for the Pelangai by-election. Three of these centres, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Chemomoi, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kemasul, and SK Sungai Kemahal, are situated in the Felda areas. The remaining six centres include Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) (SJKC) Telemong, SMK Seri Pelangai, SK Pelangai, SKJC Manchis, Dewan Serbaguna Sungai Gapoi, and Balai Raya Kampung Sungai Perdak.

A total of 312 officers have been elected by the EC to oversee the voting process, which will involve 16,383 registered electors.

The Pelangai by-election is witnessing a three-cornered fight among three candidates, namely Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, Kasim Samat of Perikatan Nasional, and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zulhasni. This by-election has been called for following the untimely demise of the incumbent Datuk Seri Johari Harun, who lost his life in a plane crash in Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor, on Aug 17.

In the 15th General Election (GE15), Johari from Barisan Nasional emerged victorious with a majority of 4,048 votes, defeating Kasim, Ahmed Wafiuddin from Pakatan Harapan, and Pejuang candidate Isa Ahmad.

The Pelangai state by-election is the fourth by-election being conducted after GE15 held on Nov 19 last year. The previous three by-elections were for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat on Aug 12, and for the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat, which occurred simultaneously on Sept 9.
