Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has criticized the unity government for failing to take care of the welfare of the people. He pointed out that there is currently a shortage of eggs and a shortage of local rice supply, making it difficult for people to source food. Muhyiddin stated that Perikatan’s policy has always prioritized the people and ensured that they had food on their table. He emphasized that Perikatan has a proven track record in caring for the welfare of the people. He hopes that voters in the district will choose a candidate who will represent their voices and serve them well at the Pahang state assembly.
In addition to the welfare concerns, Muhyiddin also raised the issue of curtailed freedom of expression. He claimed that when matters related to the Malays are raised, they are investigated by the police. He further stated that media outlets critical of the government in their reports are threatened and blocked.
The Pelangai by-elections will witness a three-cornered fight between Barisan’s Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, Kasim Samat for Perikatan, and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli, who is using the symbol of a car. The by-election was held following the death of the incumbent Datuk Seri Johari Harun in a plane crash. In the previous General Election, Johari, representing Barisan, won with a 4,048-vote majority.
Currently, Barisan holds 16 out of 42 seats in the Pahang assembly, while Pakatan holds eight, giving them administration rights over the state. Perikatan has 17 seats.
