GEORGE TOWN: Flowers are a special way to celebrate International Women’s Day, as believed by 72-year-old Susan Tan. Tan expressed her joy in starting the day with flowers, especially on such a significant occasion. She mentioned that she makes it a point to celebrate Women’s Day every year and visited the Chowrasta Market in George Town, Penang, where Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was distributing flowers. Tan missed the event last year, so she made sure to attend this time.
Tan, who is an executive secretary at a local association, shared that her children also give her flowers on Women’s Day, and she celebrates the occasion with her friends. Every year, they visit an orphanage to celebrate with the children before spending time together. This year, they celebrated early due to the actual date falling on a working day. “My kids get me flowers and I have friends who celebrate together as well,” Tan mentioned.
Sheley Wang, a 36-year-old housewife on holiday from Johor, was pleasantly surprised to receive a flower from Chief Minister Chow. Wang, who does not usually celebrate Women’s Day, appreciated the gesture and considered it a nice way to start her day. She mentioned that she planned to spend the day enjoying Penang’s food and exploring the area with her friend.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow distributed 500 carnations to women at the market, spreading cheer and emphasizing the importance of women. He extended his wishes for a Happy Women’s Day on behalf of the state government, highlighting the significance of appreciating women for their sacrifices and contributions. “We have been doing this for decades,” Chow stated, acknowledging the progress made in promoting women’s rights and the formation of various groups supporting women’s development in Penang.
Chow also noted that while there have been achievements in championing women’s rights, there is still progress to be made to ensure women have equal rights, space, and opportunities as men, particularly in politics. He emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to create a more inclusive society where women are empowered to participate in the growth of the state.
