Consumers in the South-West District of Penang island will have a 24-hour reprieve from the scheduled water supply disruption after unexpected interruptions caused by the damaged Prai River pipeline. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has stated that the remaining 16% of affected consumers will have their supply restored by Sunday evening, following a rupture in the 1,350mm pipe on Tuesday.
Re-clamping work on the pipe has been completed, and as of Saturday evening, 84% of the affected customers had their supply restored. There were initially 120,000 affected customers.
PBAPP had previously announced a scheduled water supply interruption to carry out diversion and reconnection works to two new 600mm pipelines at the Prai River to replace the old 1,350mm one.
On Sunday, it was announced that the planned water cut has been deferred to Monday in order to give consumers affected by the unexpected disruption enough time to store water. The recovery from the scheduled disruption will begin in stages from Tuesday, with resumption of full supply set for Wednesday.
The pipe leak incident on Tuesday was the third such occurrence within about a month, with the other two incidents occurring on December 18th and January 12th.
