The Penang police have taken strong action against illegal gambling activities, conducting a total of 1,041 raids and arresting 1,054 individuals involved in public lottery gambling. These raids were carried out from January to September 27 and resulted in a seizure value of RM88,879.50. Online gambling activities were also targeted, with 605 raids leading to the arrest of 630 individuals and a seizure value of RM25,058. In addition, 18 raids were carried out against illegal bookmaking or horse racing bookie activities, resulting in 32 arrests and the confiscation of assets worth RM13,961.
As part of their efforts, the police collaborated with Tenaga Nasional Berhad to carry out ‘Op Pemotongan Bekalan Elektrik’, which involved cutting off power supply to premises involved in illegal gambling activities. To date, 44 premises have been subjected to electricity supply disconnection under Section 21A of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin emphasized that the authorities would not compromise on the issue of illegal gambling in the state and would take strict action against those involved. He urged the public to report any information on illegal gambling activities to the police.
