GEORGE TOWN: Penang is set for a month of Chinese New Year festivities, with various events and celebrations happening all around the state. The events and celebrations include the Kek Lok Si light display, the Chief Minister’s open house, the Penang Snake Temple’s flame walking ceremony, the Jade Emperor God celebration, Miao Hui, a grand float procession, and Chap Goh Meh.
These events are open to the public and will provide insight into the culture and traditions of Chinese New Year celebrations in Penang. Wong Hon Wai, the state’s tourism and creative economy committee chairman, stated that a list of events has been compiled so that the public can enjoy the various celebrations.
Wong highlighted that there are plenty of activities planned, including a Chinese New Year walk, the Kek Lok Si lighting up ceremony, flame watching, and open houses. He also mentioned that Miao Hui and Chap Goh Meh are popular events, and processions will also be featured. Wong emphasized that the events list provides information on all the activities taking place on the island and mainland.
He encouraged everyone to participate and enjoy the festivities, as well as launched a local Chinese New Year song sung by Penangites to celebrate this year. The song features lyrics about local delicacies and popular sites in Penang, such as cendol, laksa, durian, Penang Hill, the Esplanade, and Balik Pulau.
The list of events includes the following activities: February 4 – Occupy Beach Street Chinese New Year Run, February 10 to March 7 – Kek Lok Si display of lights, February 11 – Chief Minister’s Chinese New Year open house, February 12 – Chinese New Year walk, and more.
These events are set to showcase the rich traditions and cultural heritage of Chinese New Year in Penang and are open to all who wish to participate and enjoy the celebrations.
