Penang native Melwin Cheng has been accepted into Stanford University in the United States, bringing pride to his parents and hometown. In recognition of his achievement, Melwin and his parents met with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at his office in Komtar, where they were presented with a certificate of recognition and RM3,000. Melwin is set to embark on a four-year Bachelor of Biology program in mid-September.
Melwin expressed gratitude towards his parents and his aunt for their support, stating, “I feel this is a reward for all my hard work.” He also highlighted his musical talents, having been a clarinet player in his school band and a member of the Penang Philharmonic Winds. Melwin is a scholarship recipient from Yayasan Khazanah.
Cheng Kah Keong and Lee Lay Peng, Melwin’s parents, expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government for sponsoring their son’s studies. They acknowledged that Stanford University is one of the most expensive institutions globally and they would not have been able to finance it alone. Lee Lay Peng mentioned that Melwin intends to return to Malaysia after completing his education and serve the country.
Melwin’s achievements include being part of a winning team in the chemistry category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2019 held in the US. He had the opportunity to present his project to former NASA astronaut Charles Bolden.
