According to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), Penang has the second highest tax collection after Sarawak, but also faces a high number of tax dodgers, especially among owners of sole proprietorships. Penang LHDN director Norfaidah Daud stated that this category has the most tax dodgers due to non-compliance. She emphasized the need to address this issue as it could result in a loss of tax collection. Norfaidah shared this information during the opening of the “Lawatan Konsultasi Hasil (LKH) LHDNM Pulau Pinang” program at Bandar Perda on September 18.
She further mentioned that Penang collected over RM7bil last year and contributed 4.78% of the total country’s collection to the Federal Government in the previous month. In 2022, LHDN achieved one of its highest tax collections at RM175.4bil, showing a significant increase of 21.75% compared to the previous year.
During the LKH program, IRB officers will visit 215 premises in the state within a four-day period. Norfaidah highlighted the promotion of the Voluntary Non-Disclosure 2.0 scheme, which received an overwhelming response. She clarified that businesses participating in this incentive will not face investigation for their past non-tax payment records.
Overall, LHDN aims to address the issue of tax dodging, particularly among sole proprietorship owners in Penang. They are concerned about the implications of non-compliance on tax collection. Despite being one of the top tax-collecting states, tax dodging remains a major challenge in the region.
