The annual Chingay Festival in Penang is coming up, with the Butterworth edition kicking off on December 23 followed by George Town on December 30. State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai announced that the parade in Butterworth will begin at Dewan Dato Haji Ahmad Badawi in Bagan Luar and end at Tow Boo Kong Temple on Jalan Raja Uda, running from 7pm to 11.30pm. The George Town parade will follow the next week, starting at Padang Brown and ending at Lebuh Light from 7pm to 11pm, with a fireworks display to cap the evening.

Wong Hon Wai emphasized the significance of the Chingay Festival in Penang, stating that it represents the multicultural heritage of the state and brings people of all backgrounds together to enjoy the vibrant colors and energetic atmosphere of the event. He expressed his excitement for the upcoming festival, underscoring the resilience and unity of the people of Penang.

As part of this year’s festival lineup, there will be interactive exhibitions and other cultural performances in addition to the parade. Wong Hon Wai highlighted the meticulous planning that has gone into every aspect of the festival, promising an unforgettable experience for the audience.

The name “Chingay” comes from the Mandarin term for “the art of costume” and “masquerade” in Hokkien. The festival has a rich history, with the first Chingay performance in Penang taking place in 1919 to celebrate the birthday of the Goddess of Mercy, originally organized by market traders and other Chinese communities. Over the years, the festival has evolved from its original purpose to be recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by the National Heritage Department in 2012.
