Recently, the Penang government has been closely monitoring the water catchment area (KTA) at the Air Itam Dam and the Teluk Bahang Dam. This monitoring is in relation to a potential second cloud seeding operation following rain that occurred in the state the day before. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that Penang received 11.5mm of rainfall at the Air Itam Dam and 3mm at the Teluk Bahang Dam.

Additionally, the Mengkuang Dam saw 47mm of rain over the course of two days. Chow stated, “We will closely monitor the rain situation because if it starts raining, they (National Disaster Management Agency) will consider (to do cloud seeding) and if necessary we will request more (cloud seeding).” This statement was made during a press conference on Sunday where he also presented letters of appointment to members of the Women and Family Development Committee (JPWK) and the Penang Youth Committee (JBPP).

Chow further elaborated on the state government’s efforts to ensure the effective capacity of the Air Itam Dam reaches 50 percent by May. Various initiatives have been undertaken, including the implementation of the Air Itam Dam Action Plan 2024 (AIDAP 2024). Currently, the water level at the Air Itam Dam stands at 37 percent.

He emphasized, “We are trying to see that the condition of the Air Itam Dam is restored until its capacity reaches 50 percent by May, and usually April will bring rain to Penang, but with climate change, we need to monitor the situation.” The ongoing commitment to managing water resources is crucial for the sustainability of the state and its residents.

Cloud seeding operations have proven to be an effective method to induce rainfall in areas experiencing drought conditions. The decision to proceed with a second cloud seeding operation will depend on the weather conditions and the assessment of the National Disaster Management Agency. Penang is determined to take proactive measures to secure its water supply and maintain the stability of its dams.

As the state prepares for the upcoming months, the focus remains on water conservation and management strategies. The collaborative efforts between various agencies and stakeholders will contribute to the overall resilience of Penang’s water supply system. It is imperative to stay vigilant and responsive to changing climatic patterns to safeguard the environment and support the well-being of the community.

The commitment to sustainable water management is a priority for the Penang government, as reflected in their ongoing efforts and initiatives. By addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring the efficient utilization of water resources, Penang aims to build a resilient and secure water infrastructure for the benefit of its residents. The proactive approach taken by the state authorities demonstrates their commitment to addressing water scarcity and mitigating the impact of severe weather events.

Overall, the continuous monitoring of water levels and catchment areas, coupled with strategic interventions like cloud seeding, underscores Penang’s determination to overcome challenges related to water scarcity and climate variability. With a comprehensive action plan in place and a focus on sustainable water management practices, the state is poised to address future water challenges effectively and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
