Approximately 350,000 or 60% of the affected water consumers in the state now have their water supply back to normal, just a little over 30 hours after the scheduled disruption began in Butterworth.
Deputy Energy Transition and Public Utilities Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir announced at a press conference held at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant on Thursday (Jan 11) that the two major valve replacements have been completed.
Nasrullah also mentioned that all but one of the 22 scheduled repair tasks have been completed, with the final repair job at Sungai Prai currently at 50% completion.
He expressed confidence in the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) to resolve the remaining issue at Sungai Prai.
Nasrullah commended PBAPP for restoring water supply to several areas earlier than planned and for completing the repair works ahead of schedule. During his visit to the water treatment plant, he was briefed by PBAPP chief executive officer K. Pathmanathan. He was accompanied by National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Charles Santiago.
