GEORGE TOWN: N.V. Subbarow, the education officer of the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), suggests that the water disruption in Penang should be seen as a learning opportunity rather than a cause for debate.

Instead of blaming the Chief Minister or the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), Subbarow believes that this disruption is unavoidable and can serve as an opportunity for parents to teach their children the importance of water conservation.

Subbarow also highlights the water disruption issues faced by other states like Selangor, emphasizing the need for Penangites to be mindful of the situation and try to conserve water.

He informs that the PBAPP will be placing 60 static water tanks at targeted areas and deploying 99 tankers to supply water during the disruption period.

Subbarow encourages people to take this opportunity to educate themselves on water wastage and to find ways to conserve water in their daily lives.

He suggests simple steps like turning off the tap when not in use, which can save up to eight gallons of water per day.

In addition, Subbarow advises installing water-saving shower heads, using dual-flush toilets, and being mindful of water usage while hand-washing dishes.

He points out that implementing these water-saving tactics can reduce in-home water use by up to 35%.

It is estimated that almost 600,000 consumers will be affected by the scheduled water cut from Jan 10-14, which is necessary for valve replacement work at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant and repair work at several locations along the main pipeline.
