A newcomer from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Penang, Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo, has expressed confidence in his chances of winning the Perai seat in the upcoming election. He believes that his victory would not be because of his personal appeal but rather because of the party’s popularity and the Penangites’ comfort with the Pakatan Harapan-led state government. Sundarajoo also highlighted the advantages of contesting under an established party and being part of the state government.
Sundarajoo acknowledged the challenge of being a new face in the political landscape but emphasized that voters in Penang prioritize the party’s affiliation over individual candidates when casting their votes. He mentioned the support of the strong party and being part of the federal government as assets that can contribute to their accomplishments.
Responding to concerns about competition from ex-DAP city councillor David Marshel, Sundarajoo assured the public that several solutions to local issues were already in progress. These issues include problems related to property ownership titles, traffic congestion during celebrations near Sri Muniswarar Temple, inadequate drainage systems leading to flash floods, and squatting problems in Kampung Manis.
Sundarajoo revealed that he had initiated discussions with the landowner of Kampung Manis, where nearly 300 families are living as squatters along both sides of Sungai Prai. The landowner, Railroad Assets Corporation (RAC) under the Transport Ministry, plans to issue a Request for Proposal in the next two months, with a process expected to take six to eight more months. Sundarajoo’s proactive approach demonstrates his commitment to addressing the housing needs of these squatters.
Sundarajoo’s walkabout in Chai Leng Park was attended by DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. Together, they engaged with the community and listened to their concerns, reflecting the party’s dedication to grassroots organizing.
