In IPOH, the police conducted raids on three premises for stealing electricity to power cryptocurrency mining operations. Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri stated that the raids took place in Jelapang and Bercham, near IPOH, on January 25 and 26. The syndicate was found to be tampering with the electricity supply at the premises, leading to a joint raid with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

The investigation by TNB revealed that the syndicate had illegally tapped into the electricity supply, causing losses of RM45,294 for TNB. In addition, 137 cryptocurrency-mining machines worth RM68,500 were confiscated during the raid. According to Comm Mohd Yusri, the syndicate was making around RM164,400 per month in profits from their illegal activities.

The case is under investigation under Section 37 (1) of the Electricity Act 1990 and Section 427 of the Penal Code. Comm Mohd Yusri urged the public to report any information regarding individuals or premises involved in illegal activities. He also advised those renting out their premises to monitor their tenants’ activities to prevent involvement in illegal activities. The public can contact the Ipoh District Control Centre at 05-254 2222.
