The Perak government has introduced a new geo-disaster system to assist with flood management. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad stated that the system is equipped with a Geographic Information System (GIS), which provides information on various complex issues such as infrastructure development, natural resources, environmental land management, and health matters. This integration allows related agencies and departments to identify and monitor high-risk areas. The system was launched during the Geospatial Aspiration program at the state secretariat building, attended by Saarani.
Saarani acknowledged that State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suadi Abdul Rahim initiated the application, believing it will greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of disaster management, particularly for floods. The application is accessible via smartphones. Notable features include vacancy information at evacuation centers and the ability for relevant agencies to monitor the number of rescued victims. Full access to the system is limited to government departments and agencies, while the public can only access certain aspects. Nonetheless, the GIS can also provide information to benefit the state’s economic sector.
According to Saarani, the GIS system can supply critical information relating to infrastructure development, natural resources, environmental land management, and health matters. It can assist in mapping fishing areas, potentially increasing the catch for fishermen and improving food resources and the fishermen’s economy.
