IPOH: The state of Perak in Malaysia is preparing to construct the first non-radioactive rare earth element (NR-REE) laboratory, according to Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar announced that the laboratory will be a joint effort by three state agencies: Menteri Besar Incorporated, Perak’s State Agriculture Development Corporation (SADC), and State Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). Saarani emphasized the importance of this initiative as Perak is leading in NR-REE mining, stating that the laboratory will allow other states such as Terengganu, Kelantan, and Pahang to authenticate their findings. Saarani made these remarks during his opening speech at the Perak Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) 55th anniversary dinner at WEIL Hotel on October 4.
The decision to establish the laboratory was recently made, and Saarani noted that it received approval during the National Mineral meeting with Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad on October 2. Additionally, the federal government granted permission to expand the mining area for the rare earth element. Furthermore, plans are underway to construct factories to produce the end-product of NR-REE. Previously, on September 23, it was reported that the industry in Perak intends to expand the mining area from 87.4ha to 2,160.6ha.
