KUALA LUMPUR: According to Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, there are more qualified candidates for prime minister in Perikatan Nasional compared to the ruling pact. He stated that “Larut (Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin) can do it, Pagoh (Tan Sri Muhhyiddin Yassin) can do it, and Arau (Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim) as well. On the other side, there is only one.” He expressed his views in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Sept 13).
The president of PAS also claimed that it was “haram” for the Federal Government to not fulfill the terms of the agreement on oil royalty for petroleum resources extracted from Kelantan and Terengganu. He mentioned an agreement that was made during Tun Abdul Razak’s tenure and referred to the Petroleum Development Act (PDA 1974) signed in the 1970s.
Abdul Hadi Awang acknowledged that many of the leaders involved in this process have passed away, but Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is still alive. He suggested asking Tengku Razaleigh for more information when responding to a question about why Perikatan did not resolve this issue during their time in power.
Since 1976, Sabah and Sarawak, the two other petroleum-producing states, have been receiving 5% oil royalty under the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974.
