PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional has expressed serious concern over the recent decision of the Federal Court, emphasizing that it will have a significant impact on syariah laws in the country.
Coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that in light of the recent decision, Perikatan will convene a roundtable conference led by Datuk Idris Ahmad through a special technical committee and law documentation led by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
“This is to consider the recommendation on the action needed to strengthen the status of syariah laws, particularly to safeguard the interests of Muslims in general,” said Muhyiddin in a statement after chairing the Perikatan supreme council meeting on Thursday (Feb 15).
“The meeting today extensively deliberated the Federal Court’s decision regarding the Kelantan syariah criminal enactment recently and its impact on syariah laws, Muslims, and Malaysian society at large.
“The roundtable discussion and technical committee will involve the participation of constitutional and Islamic law specialists, ulamas, Islamic academicians, and other stakeholders,” he added.
Muhyiddin also announced that Labu assemblyman Mohamad Hanifah Abu Bakar, who is Negri Sembilan Bersatu chief, has been appointed as the state’s Perikatan information head effective Feb 12.
“The council records its appreciation to Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu for his services and contribution as the previous Negri Sembilan Perikatan chief,” Muhyiddin said.
