KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional Youth will work together with the police to ensure the smooth operation of the Save Malaysia Movement rally scheduled for Saturday (Sept 16), according to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, the chief of the party. He mentioned that discussions between the coalition and the police have already commenced on Monday (Sept 11).
“Tomorrow (Sept 13), Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal and I will go to the Dang Wangi police station to give our statements. We will utilize this opportunity to engage in further discussions with the police regarding their cooperation in ensuring the success of our event,” he stated during a press conference held at the Parliament on Tuesday (Sept 12).
Ahmad Fadhli also expressed their willingness to change the rally’s location. Originally, it was planned to be held near the Sogo complex. “We were advised to hold the rally at a larger venue. We have also deliberated about changing the location to the front of the Selangor Foundation. Details pertaining to the location will be announced periodically,” he added.
He further mentioned his confidence in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s pro-reformation government and its full cooperation towards the success of the rally, unless there is fear on their part. He stated, “If there are no provocations or obstacles, it is anticipated that numerous youths from all over the country will participate in the rally,” referring to the Pasir Mas MP’s statement.
Earlier during the Dewan Rakyat session, Ahmad Fadhli urged the government to facilitate the process for the upcoming demonstration on Saturday. In his speech on the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review, he said, “If you want us to change the location, we will do so. We simply want an avenue to express the people’s dissatisfaction.” He assured that the protesters will adhere to all regulations while taking part in the street protests. He also reminded the ruling government of their previous support for freedom of demonstrations.
Ahmad Fadhli also raised questions about the necessity of police permits for street demonstrations, urging the government to provide clarity on this matter. On Sunday (Sept 10), Ahmad Fadhli announced that they will hold a gathering on Sept 16, in response to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s discharge, which does not equate to an acquittal, on 47 corruption charges related to Yayasan Akalbudi funds, as granted by the High Court.
